EC: The European Commission is interested in Belarus' joining the WTO

European Commission is interested in Belarus' joining the World Trade Organization, said the head of the EC Delegation in Minsk, Jean-Eric Holzapfel.

There are issues on the WTO: Belarus is not a member. At some point in the development of our relations with Belarus, it would have to join the WTO, - he said at a briefing in Minsk.

reminded that Belarus created a customs union with Russia and Kazakhstan, and these three countries have declared intentions to conduct joint negotiations on accession to the WTO.

According to him, Belarus has informed the European Commission to participate in the establishment of the Customs Union and the intention to coordinate its work on WTO accession with partners in the Customs Union.

He noted that there remains the possibilityof entry into the WTO as a troika and negotiate separately, but on the basis of a coordinated position.

In addition, the European diplomat pointed to some progress in the implementation by Belarus of the five requirements of the EU for bilateral cooperation.

We note some progress in Belarus in those areas, but expect more, - said Jean-E.Holtsapfel.

According to him, the progress of Belarus in five main areas is a prerequisite to an agreement on partnership and cooperation with the EU was quickly unfrozen.
